Field guide for the believers

Peace,
This is a thread compiling verses from the Qur'an in response to questions we get from Muslims or non-Muslims regarding topics such as "Obey the messenger", "Follow Muhammad", "How do you pray?", "God has a son" etc.

I will be updating this field-guide as I get more questions from people when I am outside calling men to the Qur'an alone. It is a work-in-progress:

1. If they say: Obey God and Obey the Messenger

The Messenger brought the message i.e. the Qur'an. To obey the Messenger is to obey what God says in the Qur'an. The Messenger's only job was to deliver the Message and to be a warner and bearer of good tidings.

And We sent thee only as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner to all mankind, but most men know not.
(34:28)

And obey God and obey the Messenger, and beware; but if you turn away, then know that upon Our messenger is only the clear notification.
(5:92)

Upon the Messenger is only the notification; and God knows what you reveal and what you conceal.
(5:99)

2. If they say: Follow Muhammad

Muhammad was himself following the Qur'an alone. So if we follow the Qur'an, we are following Muhammad.

And follow thou what is revealed to thee; and be thou patient until God judges; and He is the best of judges.
(10:109)

And when Our proofs are recited to them as clear signs, those who look not for the meeting with Us say: “Bring thou a Qur’an other than this; or change thou it.” Say thou: “It is not for me to change it of my own accord. I follow only what is revealed to me. I fear, if I should disobey my Lord, the punishment of a tremendous day.”
(10:15)
Say thou: “Had God willed, I would not have recited it to you, nor would He have made it known to you; for I had tarried among you a lifetime before it.” Will you then not use reason!
(10:16)

3. If they say: Are you a Muslim/You are not a Muslim

Say thou: “O mankind: if you are in doubt about my doctrine: I serve not those whom you serve besides God; but I serve God, who will take you; and I am commanded to be of the believers;
(10:104)
“And: ‘Set thou thy face towards the doctrine, inclining to truth; and be thou not of the idolaters;
(10:105)
“‘And call thou not, besides God, to what neither profits thee nor harms thee; for if thou dost, then art thou of the wrongdoers.’”
(10:106)

4. If they say God has a son/Jesus Christ is the son

They say: “God has taken a son.” Glory be to Him! He is the Free from Need; to Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is in the earth! You have no authority for this; do you ascribe to God what you know not?
(10:68)
Say thou: “Those who invent lies about God will not succeed.”
(10:69)
An enjoyment in the World, then to Us is their return; then will We let them taste the severe punishment because of what they denied.
(10:70)

It is not for God to take a son. Glory be to Him! When He decrees a matter, He but says to it: “Be thou,” and it is.
(19:35)

The Originator of the Heavens and the Earth: how could He have a son when He has no companion, and He created all things? And He knows all things.
(6:101)

5. If they say: How do you pray?

Tell them that if they really think salaat means prayer then explain how Shuyab’s prayer was commanding him?

They said: “O Shuʿayb: does thy duty command thee that we leave what our fathers served, or that we do not with our wealth what we will? Thou art the clement, the right-minded!”
(11:87)
He said: “O my people: have you considered: if I be upon clear evidence from my Lord, and He has provided me with a goodly provision from Him[...]? But I desire not to oppose you in that which I forbid you; I desire only right ordering, so far as I am able. And my success is only through God; in Him have I placed my trust, and to Him do I turn.”
(11:88)

Ask them where in the Qur'an the names of their 5 prayers are. Ask them specifically who taught them how to pray (did they learn from their father, uncle, mother how to pray)? Then show them these verses in the Qur'an:

O mankind: eat of what is in the earth lawful and good, and follow not the footsteps of the satan; he is to you an open enemy.
(2:168)
He but enjoins upon you evil and sexual immorality, and that you ascribe to God what you know not.
(2:169)
And when it is said to them: “Follow what God has sent down,” they say: “Nay, we will follow that upon which we found our fathers,” — even though their fathers did not reason, nor were they guided?
(2:170)
And the likeness of those who ignore warning is as the likeness of one who yells to what hears not save a call and a shout: deaf, dumb, blind, so they do not reason.
(2:171)

Do you not see that God made subject to you what is in the heavens and what is in the earth, and has lavished upon you His favours, outward and inward? But among men is he who disputes concerning God, without knowledge, or guidance, or an illuminating Writ;
(31:20)
And when it is said to them: “Follow what God has sent down,” they say: “Nay, we will follow that upon which we found our fathers.” — Even though the satan invites them to the punishment of the Inferno?
(31:21)
And whoso submits his face to God, and is a doer of good, he has grasped the most firm handhold; and to God is the final outcome of matters.
(31:22)

6. If they say: What does aqeem-u-salat (establish prayer) mean then?

It means to establish the commands of God in the Writ (al-kitab). The Children of Israel were also told to "aqeem-u-salat", does that mean that they have to pray an Islamic prayer or does it mean that they should follow the commands of God?

And when We took an agreement of the children of Israel: “Serve not save God; and towards parents good conduct, and towards kin, and the fatherless, and the poor; and speak kindly to men; and uphold the duty, and render the purity,” then you turned away save a few among you; and you are averse.
(2:83)
And when We took your agreement: “Shed not your blood, and turn not your own out of your homes,” then you affirmed and bore witness;
(2:84)
Then are you those who kill your own, and turn a faction among you out of their homes, assisting one another against them in sin and enmity; and if they come to you as captives, you ransom them, but unlawful for you was their expulsion. Do you believe in part of the Writ and deny part? Then what is the reward of him among you who does that save disgrace in the life of this world? And on the Day of Resurrection they are sent back to the harshest punishment; and God is not unmindful of what you do.
(2:85)

7. If they say: there is no God

Say thou: “Who provides for you from the heaven and the earth?” If He who owns the hearing and the sight, and He who brings forth the living from the dead and brings forth the dead from the living, and He who directs the matter — then will they say: “God” — then say thou: “Will you then not be in prudent fear!”
(10:31)
For that is God, your Lord, the Truth; then what is there after the truth but error? How then are you diverted?
(10:32)

8. If they say Muhammad guides?

Say thou: “Is there among your partners one that guides to the truth?” Say thou: “God guides to the truth; is then He who guides to the truth worthier to be followed, or he who guides not save he be guided? Then what ails you? How judge you?”
(10:35)

1. If they say: Obey God and Obey the Messenger

Also say that God in some verses is adressing the people who are living with the messenger. AND NOT ADRESSING US
example:
O you who heed warning: enter not the houses of the Prophet, save that leave be given to you for a meal, without watching for its hour. But when you are called, then enter; and when you have eaten, then disperse. And seek not to remain for conversation; that hinders the Prophet, and he is shy of you; but God is not shy of the truth. And when you ask of his wives an item: ask it of them from behind a partition; that is purer for your hearts and their hearts. And it is not for you to hinder the messenger of God, or to marry his wives after him ever; that were, in the sight of God, monstrous.
(33:53)

As we see here, its an order to people who are from the time of the prophet
"But when you are called, then enter". Means obey the messenger when he calls you to enter his house
As we can see that is not made to us, as we know the messenger is dead.
